Dental tips for Father’s day

Why men over 40 should care about dental health more | Dental tips for Father’s day

If you’re the man of the house, you probably think that dental health is the last thing on your priority list. Even on Father’s day, there are usually a ton of responsibilities, to-do’s and things you need to take care of that come first. There are, however, a few reasons why all dads should keep their teeth in mind this Father’s day (especially after you’ve munched your way through all the cookies!) Did you know that 95 percent of oral cancer diagnoses occur in those over 40 years of age? This is a particular concern for men, who are less likely to take care of their teeth than women (according to studies and surveys from the Academy of General Dentistry and the American Dental Association). Not only are men less likely to follow a proper oral hygiene routine each day, but they’re also less likely to seek preventative dental care and only book an appointment with their dentist if a noticeable dental problem arises.

Some more dental statistics

  1. According to Knowyourteeth.com, the average man brushes his teeth 1.9 times a day and will lose 5.4 teeth by age 72
  2. A smoker (male) can plan on losing 12 teeth by age 72
  3. Only 20.5 percent of men brush their teeth after every meal
  4. The average man is less likely to brush his teeth twice a day (49%)

Men are also more likely to develop gum diseases than woman. Now, before you make a fuss about the all-male statistics or tell us how often you floss – remember that everybody (male and female) should visit their dentist at least twice a year to make sure their pearly whites are in a good condition.
